Gear Review: Canon EF-S 17-55 F2.8 IS

So last week I skipped the Gear review since it was my Birthday, who really wants to do any sibilance of work on their Birthday? Not me!

So here we go… Gear review time… the  Canon EF-S 17-55 F2.8 IS. In another quick review I show the usefulness of the Image stabilization when shooting  HD Video hand held with a T2I or 7D crop frame sensor.

Test notes:

I was walking across my front yard which is a good test since it is not the smoothest of surfaces. I was holding the camera hand held by the back of the camera and not gently cupped in my hand around the lens toe maintain “better” center of gravity.  I felt at 17mm (27mm equivalent) it worked great. At 35mm ( 56mm equivalent) it was not useful. I think it just to jittery. This maybe solved a bit by holding at a closer center of gravity like i mentioned before.

I shot with this lens on a wedding recently and had much better results than with my test here, I will try to update this once I finish editing on the wedding, work does come first!

Dave Dugdale - Thanks Joel, I need a lens like that one. How much did you pick it up for? Also, I would still like to see a behind the scenes of your set.

Joel - Thanks Dave, I rented the lens for a wedding, but I think they run about $1000 new. I am working on the behind the scenes, been getting caught up with other projects. Soon I promise!

erim - Great site, Joel - just wondering if you had also experienced moiree effect with the 17-55 (with t2i in video moder) or if you know in-camera workflows to get rid of it. i did a video where you can see it especially in the wide shots http://www.vimeo.com/16272369 (i used some diffusion and flickr reduce to compensate, but its still there) some say the lens might be too sharp for video...but i can't believe this :)

Joel - Not sure of any work a rounds, other than the use of an anti-moire filter. Not sure how well they work, i think they are just diffusers. The lens isn't too sharp for video, it is the way the sensor re-sizes and compresses the image that i think is the problem.
