Gear Review: Studio Tour and VLOG Lighting Set UP

This week on the Hartz Photographic Studios VLOG I am giving you a quick studio tour showing my lighting set up. I have had a number of people asking about my set up and since I promised them I would show it…

Oh and I almost melted while shooting this, it was literally 97 degrees outside and 96 degrees inside the studio. I am still working on the A/C issue. Luckily I do most my studio work in the fall and spring.

Notes:

Shot on the Canon T2I with a Canon 24-70 F 2.8 L at F4.o 1/50 ISO 800.

Audio: Rode Video Mic on a background stand on the table in front of me.

Overhead is an 18″ Chinese paper lantern with 4 100w Daylight Balanced N:Vision (DuraBright?) CFL’s.

Just below camera on camera axis is an 11″ reflector with two 100W Daylight Balanced N:Vision (DuraBright?) CFL’s. And a sheet of heavy frost diffusion as a Fill/Diva light.

Custom color balanced using a Digital Calibration Target from PhotoVision , note I gave the incorrect web address in the video. The correct website address is www.photovisionvideo.com

As usual, leave a comment with any questions or suggestions and I will do my best to answer them for you. Oh and if you like this then share it! A link back to this page is helpful too for all the extra details.

Dave Dugdale - Very cool, thanks for sharing! It is always fun to see what others are doing. Can you talk about your black backdrop? Does it have a pattern on it? Also one of the links is broken. :) Yes, I would like to see how you set exposure and white balance to see if it is the same way I do it.

Joel - Thanks Dave, I fixed the links. The backdrop in the lighting set up video is my studio wall. It is just OSB that is painted black, hence the slight pattern.

Johnny - One of my favourite behind the scenes vlog video EVER. How can I achieve that crisp looking video. I have the Canon T2i with the kit lens and also the 50mm 1.8 lens as well. I edit it in FCE 4. I would like to believe I have a decent equipment but my videos are not as crisp as yours. Any tips/ suggestion? Thanks so much for taking my question!

Joel - Thank you for the kind words! what resolution are you shooting in? I typically shoot in 1080 unless i need slow motion then I shoot in 720, I export all the Behind the Lens videos at 720 which helps a little with adding some extra crispness. Additionally i apply an unsharp mask filter in premire to the video footage. Your export setting may be a factor as well. What are you exporting your videos at?
