Gear Review: CN-126 LED Light

Here is a gear review I did of the CN-126 LED light, you can find it on E-Bay or use this link to the seller Yespainting. I purchased them for $48.90 US. Took about two weeks to get them. Check out another review on Cheesycam.com

Jon Bufkin - Great review Joel! I have the LitePanels version at 4 times the price and I don't even like it. The CN-126 with the battery options seems the way to go. Thanks for sharing.

Phil Thornton - Great review Joel! The T2i footage looks great! Hope we run into you guys soon. :)

Dereck Willis - Hi, great review of the CN-126. I actually did the original review of the CN-126 on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ul2I3ozhid4) that was embedded at Cheesycam, but I am not affiliated with Cheesycam. I've had my light since 12/09 and it still works great! They also have 160 and 183LED models available. The 160LED uses the same batteries, but the 183LED model comes with it's own battery (and costs almost $140 US)

roberto - Hi, thanks for the review. I I wonder if you could do a video showing different practical uses for these lights. Also is there a place on line to order colour correction gels?

Carlo - hi. I really like your website and also that review of the Cn 126. I got mine about aweek ago, and can only say it's great, but if you want a longer lasting-as strong LED light, check out these http://bit.ly/vartaLED. They are strong as SH*T, but lack the function of dimming, though you can put the filters of the CN 126 over them with rubber bands or just gels. I think, I'll do a review of them next week. anyways, great video and keep up the good work, carlo

Joel - Jon, They work pretty good, but they are a bit spotty, so a little extra diffusion helps. I just shot a wedding with them matched back to tungsten, I'll have to do an update on that as well. Thanks Phil, Hope to see you guys soon too! Dereck, Thanks man, I saw your video too! I am glad to hear they are still working for you! I might be interested in the 160 bulb Led to see how much more light I can get,( it is always more light). I am a big fan of the multiple battery options of the CN-126! It is just so convenient!

Dave Dugdale - Thanks Joel for the review. Good stuff. How are you lighting yourself in this video, I bet you are using much nicer lights than I am. :) Check out my similar set up with my cheap work lights here: http://www.learningdslrvideo.com/exposure-18-gray-card/ Dave

Joel - Roberto, Yeah I will try to put together a video with some practical uses. We shot with them Saturday with great results. For gels I would try locally or B&H Photovideo online (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Lighting-Filters/ci/1329/N/4289244517) , you will want to grab a few sheets a time to save on shipping. Carlo, Thanks man, I'll take a look at those varta LEd's. Look forward to the review, check the color temperature if you can.

Joel - Dave, Thanks a lot! I am using an 18" Chinese Lantern with 4 23W Daylight Florescents overhead and a small Diva light, er... 12" reflector with a 23WDaylight Florescents and some diffusion gels directly in front of me. I will try an do a video of my gear review lighting set up. In the meantime I have to finish up about 5 other reviews. BTW I'm a fan of your site! Keep it man.

Dave Dugdale - @Joel, Thanks, I'm really glad you like my site! I found your site from Emm's site CheesyCam. I would really like to see a tour of your set up, I think you video looks great and would like to try what you have sometime.

Edsard - I solved the loose hotshoe foot by unscrewing it. Then i applied a small piece of ducktape/gaffar on the plastic piece that slides between the other "u" formed fitting. Then i made a hole in the ducktape so the screw would go through it. Its a bit hard to explain, i hope it is clear enough to so you can get your hotshoe foot more stable.

Joel - Edsard, That makes sense to me. I will give it a try! Thanks. Dave, Sure thing, I will shoot a video with the set up soon.

Andy Shrestha - great review. and great video.... Can you please let us know about what you have used from cAmera to lightings in this video. Thank you in advance. Regards,

Steve - Excellent video, VERY informative. couple questions- where did you find your 1/8th minus green filters? and was it better than the included magenta? did you try the CN76 led light? thanks

Tommy Tang - How are these compared to the Lite Panel Micros & Minis? it's almost 5 time in pricing. They must be something different if not Lite Panel will be out of business.

Joel - Steve, I haven't yet tried the included minus green filters. I got the minus green from a local lighting shop, Interstate Lighting, here in Nashville, TN. You can also get them online at amazon or B&H photovideo etc. Look under gels or lighting modifiers.

Mike - Hi Joel, I am interested in how do you measure the actual color temperature? Did you use a color temperature meter or through lightroom/photoshop against perfect white?

Joel - Mike, to measure the color temperature I photographed a target (white/grey/black card) under the led light with auto WB, daylight(5200K), and setting a manual WB. Then I compared each in lightroom on a color corrected monitor and under color corrected light against the target. I used lightrooms auto WB, eyedropper on the grey of the target, and the white of the target versus my eye. It isn't perfect, but pretty darn close. To measure more precisely you could use a color meter. Just add the necessary correction gels to match back to your light source, ie. 7/8 CTO and 3/4 magenta should get you close to 3200k ( there is a big green spike with my lights).

evildoer - I have never seen a review of a light than doesn't say how much light the thing puts out. This is a first. But other than that its good and informative.

Joel - Actually i do, in LUX.

john m flores - My father-in-law owned a machine shop for years, thus his brain is filled with simple fixit ideas. I showed him the light and he suggested using some plumber's teflon tape on the threads of the bolts. I tried it - it doesn't make it rock solid but it certainly helps a lot. I now keep plumber's tape in my bag...

Joyce - Hi Joel ,Thanks for good review of Led light ,I have a model which the same function of CN-126.We called it TTV-160.Would you like to try my light ? I can send you sample if you want ? Contract with me at easy :my email is triopo@gmail.com

Joyce - Sorry ,The email address is triopo808@gamil.com

James Robideau - Can these be mounted on a standard camera tripod?

Joel - Joyce, I would be interested in trying out your light. I will send you an e-mail. Thank you for the kind words.

Joel - James, The CN-126 LED cannot be mounted on a standard camera tripod without a hotshoe adapter. You will need to find an adapter to go to 1/4 inch thread for a standard camera tripod. I usually mount them with a hotshoe to light stand adapter like the ones used for mounting a flash to a light stand.

Dave Dugdale - Joel, I have several of these lights in for review (150 LEDs). I was wondering how your lights are still holding up since you did this review?
